I think many sportsmen are farmers at heart. They’ve simply missed their calling. Think about it: farmers love being outside, alone with their thoughts. They live for overcoming weather, equipment, and wildlife. And they find a great satisfaction in providing food for themselves and others. Is that not the same soul of a sportsman? This past fall, on a crisp, breezy November afternoon, I sat in a tree stand along a cut bean field. Across my field, on the other... Read more

In a day when ship captains push aside women to leap into lifeboats, and when leaders of universities sit on their hands when they hear about the sexual abuse of children, and when no one in Washington will take responsibility for the death of four Americans in Benghazi…it’s refreshing to find an exemplar. Or, better yet, three: While much of the nation is taking pot shots at Tim Tebow for praying in public and keeping his pants on, the QB... Read more

Let’s make something other than body fat our focus in 2013. If you’re like me, you’re doing a lot of reflecting on your life this time of the year. As I think of my hopes for 2013, many of my “resolutions” have been sparked by one verse in the Old Testament: Daniel 6:4 “Then the high officials and the satraps sought to find a ground for complaint against Daniel with regard to the kingdom, but they could find no ground... Read more

I’ve been watching Planet Earth with my family. Huge kudos to the BBC Natural History Unit – these videos are breathtaking. They’re also raw and vivid in their portrayal of the brutality of “real life… painfully raw and vivid, in my 7-year-old’s opinion. Tonight we watched the “Fresh Waters” episode, and Claire shrieked and buried her head under a blanket when a crocodile laid the hammer down on an unsuspecting wildebeest. As parents, we need to live with our children... Read more

1. Chased a mouse in my boot: On Monday night, I slipped on my Muck Boots to grab some wood for the fireplace. When I stepped into the garage, I heard a squeak. Another mouse, you’ve got to be kidding me, I thought. I went into hunt-mode, flipped on the light, and looked around. Nothing. I took a couple more steps toward the woodpile, and then heard another squeak. Forget the wood, I’m catching that thing! I got on my... Read more

If you’re like me, you’ve been trying to keep up with everything happening everywhere, as commented on by everyone. All of us care deeply about what happened in Newtown. All of us care about how the family and friends of the victims are doing. All of us care that our nation responds in helpful, productive ways. It is human to care, and we are human. But none of us can process the amount of information we receive in one hour... Read more

I join the nation in saying that my heart and my prayers are with all those whose lives have been forever changed by this act of evil. May the God of all comfort walk with you through these times of immeasurable pain. We walk beside you, as well.   Come back, we beg you, O God Almighty. Look down from heaven and see our plight.   – Psalm 80:14 Read more

Listen up all you grade-school boys, in about ten years, you’re going to need to bring your A-game. I’m dating my daughters and setting a ridiculously high bar for you to clear. I’m calling them on the phone to ask them out. I’m buying them pink carnations, sunflowers, and roses. I’m opening doors. I’m asking them questions and showing interest in their answers. I’m buying their meals. And at the end of the night, I’m thanking them for giving me... Read more

I’m losing sleep at night. The last time the trailer for “The Hobbit” flashed across my television screen, I tried counting sheep, drinking warm milk, and taking a hot bath, and I still couldn’t fall asleep. December 14 can’t come soon enough. Taste for yourself: There’s a part of Tolkien’s book that holds a timely warning for us this Christmas season. Bilbo Baggins sneaks into the lair of the dragon, Smaug. He sees the gold and jewels layering the floor... Read more

Apparently a good beat and a catchy video covers a multitude of sins. Just ask PSY, the Korean rapper who now holds the record for most views on YouTube for his ‘Gangnam Style’ video. Back in 2004, PSY wasn’t making horsey-riding motions and rapping about bling-bling, he was spewing out some serious anti-American sentiments, calling for the death of our troops in Iraq. The song was titled “Dear America,” and CNN translated some of the lyrics: Kill those f–ing Yankees... Read more
