Mikey Weinstein, the head of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), and blogger for Huffington Post, recently told Fox News, “Someone needs to be punished for this…Until the Air Force or Army or Navy or Marine Corps punishes a member of the military for unconstitutional religious proselytizing and oppression, we will never have the ability to stop this horrible, horrendous, dehumanizing behavior.” Who does Weinstein believe should be punished? Christians. What’s the “horrible, horrendous, dehumanizing behavior” to which Weinstein... Read more

Mammas, don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys. Why not? Because America desperately needs them to become journalists. And not just any kind of journalists—we need them to become courageous, morally-governed, cultural commentators. Why? Because a good percentage of the current crop of reporters leading our major networks, magazines, and newspapers are spinelessly refusing to scream from the rooftops about one of the greatest humanitarian atrocities of our day: the murder of women and children by someone who... Read more

We live under a blanket of protection; a strong, thick cover of safety provided by local heroes – men and women who risk their lives every day so that we can enjoy ours in comfort and peace. We send our sincerest “THANK YOU!” to the men and women of the Boston P.D., FBI, Transit Police, Boston Fire & Rescue, and other first responders. Also, our hearts goes out tonight to the friends and family members of the first responders who... Read more

In the middle of the worst sports injury ever captured on television, a brother emerged. When Kevin Ware’s teammate, Luke Hancock, saw his friend lying on the floor with six inches of bone protruding from his skin, he felt sick and numb like the rest of America. But then Hancock collected himself and rushed to Ware’s side. Hancock held Ware’s hand and told him that they’d get through this together. Ware didn’t respond at first. He was in shock. So... Read more

Our family recently visited Washington, D.C. I had the privilege of opening the House of Representatives in prayer on Thursday, March 14. We stayed in the city for four days, visiting memorials and museums, and eating some phenomenal meals. I love our small town in “the center of it all,” but we don’t have many ethnic restaurants. The Piphers are foodies, so we scheduled our days in such a way that we’d end up near Peruvian chicken, Mongolian beef, or... Read more

Each March and April, half a million Sandhill cranes migrate through a stretch of Nebraska west of our house. Our family sat in a blind at the Rowe Sanctuary last night and watched several thousand of these cranes fly back to roost on the Platte River. Here are a few pictures and a video from the outing. Read more

Have you ever been pinned down and unable to do anything? I had a friend, Doug, who could grow a Zac-Brown-type beard in 10th grade. He could also bench 250-lbs and throw other 10th-graders around like rag dolls. I’ll never forget the time when Doug twisted my arms and legs into a pretzel and sat on me while my other buddies (and I use that term loosely) ate my share of the pizza. I lost it all because I was... Read more

If I want to write a Haiku about two chicken eggs, I will. It’s been a discouraging month; few things have worked as they should these past several weeks. I was nearing the end of my rope this afternoon when my 11-year old daughter burst into the house carrying an egg in each hand, rewards of nine months work building chicken houses, hanging roost boxes, providing food & water, and fighting off our two hunting dogs who still think that... Read more

I’m grilling hamburgers tonight in honor of Morrissey’s comment. I don’t have a problem with people who choose not to eat meat. I do have a problem, however, with someone who uses the term “serial killers” to describe hunters, and by association, farmers, ranchers and all people associated with the meat-production industry. When Steven Patrick Morrissey backed out of performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night because the men of Duck Dynasty were slotted to be Kimmel’s guests, he said:... Read more

“I know it’s wrong, but I can’t stop,” said a husband who had just admitted to me that he was having an affair. His wife was sitting next to him, holding a picture of their three children. When I asked the husband if he realized that he was flushing his life down the toilet, he paused for a moment, struck a pose akin to the thinking man, and replied, “It’s hard to explain…I just can’t stay away from her (mistress).”... Read more
