Mikey Weinstein, the head of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), and blogger for Huffington Post, recently told Fox News,
“Someone needs to be punished for this…Until the Air Force or Army or Navy or Marine Corps punishes a member of the military for unconstitutional religious proselytizing and oppression, we will never have the ability to stop this horrible, horrendous, dehumanizing behavior.”
Who does Weinstein believe should be punished?
Christians.
What’s the “horrible, horrendous, dehumanizing behavior” to which Weinstein is referring?
Sharing the belief that we are saved by faith in the grace of God through Jesus.
Weinstein is steaming mad that Christians are talking to other people about their beliefs, and trying to convince others to see things their way.
Yet, what is Weinstein doing? He’s sharing his beliefs and talking to other people about his opinions, trying to convince them to see things his way.
Only, he’s not being very nice about it. When you read his latest blog post for Huffington Post, you get a sense that Christians should be removed from society like ticks from a dog’s back. In his post, he calls Christians “bloody monsters,” “the most lethal entity every created by humankind,” people who “terrorize their fellow Americans,” “world class cowards,” “unconstitutional carpetbaggers,” “evil,” “bandits,” “cowards,” and a “hate group.” All this vitriol in one blog post.
I’m not quite sure what should bother us the most…
…the philosophical hypocrisy of someone who attacks Christians for doing the same thing he’s doing…
…or how Weinstein lumps all sincere, Bible-believing Christians into the same category with the cruel cult led by Fred Phelps…
…or the idea that a man is fighting one of the most essential, beautiful, and vital aspects of our free society: the right to have beliefs, share them, contend for them, reconsider them, abandon them, or strengthen them. We are better as a nation because of the free exchange of ideas and beliefs, as John Milton described, “When there is much desire to learn, there of necessity will be much arguing, much writing, many opinions; for opinion in good men, is but knowledge in the making.”…
…or the fact that Weinstein has so dehumanized and marginalized approximately 90 million Americans – men and women of our military, parents, children, grandparents, little league baseball coaches, farmers, and pastors – all of whom helped build the desk of freedom from which Weinstein writes with sweat on their brows, dirt under their fingernails, and little red circles on their knees from hours in prayer…
I certainly don’t defend everyone Weinstein criticizes. There are a number of Christian leaders and organizations that need to be challenged, corrected, and even rebuked. But, I can’t abide by Weinstein’s new breed of “civil rights” and “religious freedom.” It’s hypocritical and it doesn’t fight fair. It’s a mean, grumpy dog with teeth…and it bites.
