‘Gangnam Style’ OR ‘Kill Americans Style’?

‘Gangnam Style’ OR ‘Kill Americans Style’? December 7, 2012

Apparently a good beat and a catchy video covers a multitude of sins. Just ask PSY, the Korean rapper who now holds the record for most views on YouTube for his ‘Gangnam Style’ video. Back in 2004, PSY wasn’t making horsey-riding motions and rapping about bling-bling, he was spewing out some serious anti-American sentiments, calling for the death of our troops in Iraq. The song was titled “Dear America,” and CNN translated some of the lyrics:

Kill those f–ing Yankees who have been torturing Iraqi captives and those who ordered them to torture,” and going on to say, “Kill them all slowly and painfully.”

PSY recently apologized for these comments, stating: “I understand the sacrifices American servicemen and women have made to protect freedom and democracy in my country and around the world.”

What seems to have sparked this change of heart? One might speculate that it was the 905,000,000 hits on YouTube, or the invitation to perform at the American Music Awards, or the upcoming opportunity to perform for President Obama at the Christmas in Washington event.

I can appreciate a catchy tune and a brightly colored outfit as much as the next guy, but I’d like to see our country make a statement in the days ahead. Many of my closest friends served our country in Iraq, and PSY performed that song to motivate Iraqis to take up arms and kill our troops…”slowly and painfully.” American lives were lost, and while it might be fun to watch someone splash around a hot tub and ride a fake pony, that fact shouldn’t be quickly forgotten. 2004 wasn’t that long ago.
