CNN Examines Historical Christianity in Finding Jesus

CNN Examines Historical Christianity in Finding Jesus February 15, 2017

There’s been a lot of talk about “fake news” lately. Even real news gets called on the carpet for being biased or misleading. I half expect to see a debate soon on what two-plus-two really equals.

But apparently, those sorts of run-of-the-mill controversies weren’t enough for CNN. This March, the venerable news network will focus on a subject that’s bound to raise even more hackles: historical Christianity. Here’s a look at the trailer:

Finding Jesus: Faith. Fact. Forgery launches its second season March 6 with a look at the Pilate Stone, a hunk of limestone reportedly carved in the first century that mentions “Pontius Pilatus”—proof, it would seem, that Pilate was a historical figure.

The series will presumably follow the template set by the show’s first season in 2015, when scientists, scholars and theologians took a look each week at either an early Christian figure or a relic reported to be from those early days of Christendom.

For a religious wonk and history buff like me, the series sounds fascinating, but something like this has to be a bit tricky to pull off to the satisfaction of all. This trailer, what with its very reverent reenactments, seems designed to pull in Christian viewers. But not all biblical scholars tell the  faithful exactly what they want to hear. If your faith completely hinges on, say, the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, you could very well swing from Christian to atheist to Christian again, depending on which expert you’re listening to at the moment. (CNN’s own episode on the Shroud seems to suggest that, yes, it could be the real deal.)

Still, I love this stuff, and I’ll be reviewing at least the first episode or two. I’m eager to give this show a look-see.
