  1. Last Days in the Desert: Starring Ewan McGregor as both Jesus and Satan, the film gives us an extra-biblical parable: As Jesus leaves the torments of the Wilderness, He meets a man, woman and their teenage boy on the cusp of a crisis. Satan challenges Jesus to find a solution for this family, to “untie the Gordian knot,” as he says—all while tempting Christ in other ways, too. Of all the films to feature Jesus this year, Last Days was certainly the most provocative and, for many viewers, the most bothersome. Satan, in his efforts to undercut Jesus’ own faith in Himself, sometimes works to undercut ours. But if we remember that Lucifer lies, we’re left with a thought-provoking rumination on the nature of Jesus—and a reminder that the Son of God was fully man, too.
