Lion: When he was 5 years old, Saroo (Sunny Pawar) accidentally fell asleep on a train and was whisked away from his life and family. When he woke up, he tried to find his way home, but to no avail. No one knew the town he came from. He only knew his mother as “Mum.” Twenty-five years later—now the adopted son of a pair of loving Australians—Saroo (Dev Patel) realizes that he must try to find where he came from. Lion is a beautiful, sad, inspirational and, most remarkably, true tale, and one that made me a little weepy toward the end. It was a hard decision to choose, between this and the next film on the list. For me, Lion isn’t so much No. 2 as it is No. 1a.
