- Moonlight: This is a gritty, gripping and problematic coming-of-age story of a boy/teen/young man (played by three different actors) on the tough streets of Miami, and much of what he’s dealing with is his sexual identity. Yes, this film may be challenging and troubling for Christians who’d watch it, particularly conservative Christians. Many won’t watch, and that’s fine and, considering the level of content here, perhaps even prudent. But they’ll be missing out on a moving story often beautifully told—one that puts a human face on an issue that we Christians sometimes do our best to keep at a distance. And honestly, I’m not sure if there’s another movie released this year that, in terms of its writing and acting, surpasses it.
