You Picked What?! Watching God’s Best Movies of 2016

You Picked What?! Watching God’s Best Movies of 2016 December 30, 2016

I love reading year-end lists. I’m not such a big fan of writing them.

Hey, it’s not easy to sift through all the year’s movies and come up with what I think are “the best.” What does that even mean, anyway? Are these the best movies, aesthetically speaking? The stuff that secular critics drool over and take home scads of awards? Or are these the movies that I enjoyed the most? The movies that made me smile while leaving the theater? And what about the movie’s message? This blog is called Watching God, after all. Shouldn’t we be honoring those movies that have some cable of spirituality running through them?

As such, the movies below represent the year’s “best” in a variety of ways. Oscarbait films rub elbows with blockbusters. Tiny indie flicks hang with giant animated spectacles. Few are overtly spiritual, but several have a nugget of something transcendent that moved me.

But even though I cheated a little, expanding my list to 12 instead of the standard 10, a lot of worthy movies missed the cut. And in all honesty, there are a few films I suspect might’ve made the list—Martin Scorsese’s Silence, I’m looking at you—but I haven’t actually seen them yet.

But hey, we live in a fallen world, right? Even the best of “best of” list has its flaws. So now it’s time to take a look at mine!
