The Lion in Winter (1968)
Peter O’Toole plays Henry II for the second time in his career—earning yet another Oscar nom. This time, Henry’s not clashing with Becket, but with his own family. Two more future English Kings, Richard the Lionheart (Anthony Hopkins) and King John (Nigel Terry) of Magna Carta fame, make an appearance here, and future James Bond Timothy Dalton appears as the young French king Philip II. But the real star here is the great Katharine Hepburn as Henry’s wife, the indomitable Eleanor of Aquitaine. She won her third of four Academy Awards for the role. Here she is, giving three of her sons a much-needed scolding.
