The Queen (2006)
While Netflix’s The Crown is giving us a glimpse at the early days of Elizabeth II’s reign, The Queen (directed by The Crown creator Peter Morgan) gives us a more recent picture of England’s reigning monarch, focusing its attention on the days following Princess Diana’s death in 1997. Diana was beloved by Britain but not so much by its royal house, and this divide put Elizabeth in an awkward spot. Helen Mirren’s sensitive, restrained depiction of Elizabeth earned her an Oscar for Best Actress. Perhaps you can see why in this clip.
