Did The Walking Dead Go Too Far? A Watching God Podcast

Did The Walking Dead Go Too Far? A Watching God Podcast October 30, 2016

More than 20 million people watched last Sunday’s Season Seven premiere of The Walking Dead. No surprise there, given that AMC’s zombie show has been a ratings winner ever since its inception.

The episode was brutal, with new Big Bad Negan killing two popular characters with his barbed-wire-wrapped baseball bat Lucille. No surprise there either, according to longtime fans. The Walking Dead has always been incredibly bloody.

But for me, the episode was incredibly hard to watch. It felt more than gross to me. It felt sadistic–the worst sort of entertainment. But when I wrote a blog for my gig at Plugged In noting how many secular reviewers said the episode went too far, I was a little surprised by the reaction on the Plugged In Facebook page. Lots of readers–many of them, presumably, fairly conservative Christian viewers who read Plugged In–defended the show.

So with all that in mind, we threw together Watching God’s first rough podcast, featuring me, my good friend/pseudo podcast host Jake Roberson (@jake_roberson on Twitter) and special guest/Walking Dead fan Tim Nester (@tim_nester), who co-hosts his own gaming-centric podcast “Fathers of the Grind.” The sound quality ain’t the best, but the conversation itself was pretty cool. Take a listen.
