Harley Quinn

While Enchantress is used to being worshipped, Harley Quinn has been trained to worship—turning her devotion to the Clown Prince of Crime. In many ways, Joker is more than Harley’s “puddin’”. he is her god—a god that demands unwavering, unquestioned obedience. Theirs is a co-dependent relationship dependent on dysfunction and more than a bit of brainwashing: Joker leads a cult with just one true follower.

Consider the conversation that Joker has with Harley (when she’s still his supposed shrink Dr. Quinzel) while both stand above a pool of ooky chemicals.

“Would you die for me?” Joker asks.

“Yes,” she says.

“That’s too easy,” he says. “Would you … would you live for me? … Careful,” he adds, riffing a bit on the Christian concept of dying to oneself. Do not say this oath thoughtlessly. Desire becomes surrender, surrender becomes power. Do you want this?”

“I do,” Quinzel says. And after a few more words of dialogue, Joker gently pushes her into the pool—a twisted, blasphemous baptism into the church of Joker.
