‘We Have a Calling:’ Conjuring 2 Writers Talk About Where Faith and Fright Meet June 9, 2016

Though the real Ed Warren passed away before the movies were made, Lorraine has been a consultant for both. She’s been immensely helpful, the brothers say, adding that she believes fervently in the power of Christ to ward off evil. Sometimes, when they’d be talking to her on the phone, the line would get so clogged with interference that they could barely hear each other. Lorraine would immediately start praying on the other line and, lo and behold, the static would melt away.

“It would give us chills,” Chad admits.

Chad and Carey also take their faith seriously. Throughout their work on The Conjuring 2, they pulled inspiration straight from the Bible—specifically Ephesians 6, where it talks about how Christians wrestle with “this present darkness” and must therefore don the armor of God. Thematically, that’s what we try to encompass,” Chad says.

These films, he and Carey believe, can actually lead people to God. In fact, they know they can: They’ve seen it happen.

“We have a calling to write these films,” Chad says. And they’re following that calling frighteningly well.
