A bevy of movies were released on video yesterday: 22 Jump Street, Into the Storm, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and others. But I wanted to draw your attention to a film you might not see at your local big-box store: The documentary Legends of the Knight.
Why should you care? Well, let me give you three.
1. I’m in it. And if that’s not reason to watch, I don’t know what is.
2. It’s all about Batman. Or rather, it’s all about people who’ve found inspiration in Batman’s story.
3. I’m biased, naturally, but I think it’s actually quite good. Take a look at the trailer, if you don’t believe me. (You can see me in it, actually—right next to my purple dining room wall—in all my awkward glory.)
Legends of the Knight was produced and directed by a guy named Brett Culp, whom I met through this project. We connected after he read my book, God on the Streets of Gotham, and he clearly digs Batman as much as I do—probably more so, really. Culp spent more than a year tracking down some pretty big names (and me) to flesh out this passion project of his. Culp didn’t intend for the project to be a “Christian” movie, exactly … but when he started screening the movie around the country, Culp discovered that it seemed to resonate particularly with a faith-based audience. And maybe that’s because Batman so embodies some themes that Christians are so familiar with: finding strength and redemption in the midst of pain and tragedy, following a higher moral calling, overcoming our darker inclinations to grasp for something brighter and better.
Or maybe it’s just because a surprising number of us Christians are superhero geeks. I was really happy to have the opportunity to take part in this project, even in a pretty small way.
