A quick note about the Presidential election, no matter what side you’re on

I’m back! As many of you have noticed, I haven’t been writing blog posts regularly since the birth of Samuel. As you might imagine, our lives have changed pretty dramatically over the last few months. Catherine and I have both had to alter our routines (Catherine much more so than me) but now I feel like we’re finally getting into a rhythm and I’m happy to get back to blogging now that things have settled down a bit.

Today I want to touch on something that’s extremely relevant- the presidential race. No matter what side of the aisle you lean towards, I think we can all agree these are scary times. Maybe it’s the dad in me but I’m nervous about the future of our country. I’m scared that we’re on a downward trajectory and things may only get worse. Maybe I’m being irrational. Or maybe I recognize that every dynastic global power eventually meets its demise. And maybe I realize evil exists and it wants to inflict suffering on the innocent. Either way, I don’t plan on placing my hopes of salvation in the hands of a man or woman.

Each time I have the chance to speak at a church, I’m usually asked what my favorite Bible verse is, to which I always reply James 4:14- “How do you know what will happen tomorrow? For your life is like the morning fog- it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.” I love this verse because it puts my life here on Earth in perspective. Even if I’m lucky enough to live a hundred years, it’s still just a blink of an eye compared to eternity. It reminds me that I need to focus on what’s most important- following Jesus and sharing his love and grace with those who don’t know him. This world can be ugly (as we’re witnessing), life can be hard, heartbreak will happen, but it’s not forever. James 4:14 reminds me that even though we live in a fallible and broken world, I’m called to be a light in the darkness and my hope and strength is derived from Jesus.

With all that said, I’m praying for a revival to sweep the country. I think we can come together and correct our country’s course but I believe we’re going to have to draw closer to our creator for that to happen. So I’m encouraging you all to fight the good fight and keep your eyes on the greater prize.
