4 ways to wreck your life.

4 ways to wreck your life. May 16, 2014

As a pastor and writer, I’ve interacted with many people who feel like they’ve wrecked their lives. I’ve seen a lot of common trends that tend to lead masses of people down a path to ruin, and there’s some good news. First off, these “life wreckers” are 100% preventable and within your power to avoid (or to stop doing if you’ve started). Second, I believe in the life-changing power of God’s grace, so no matter how messed up your life might seem right now, He can offer you forgiveness, hope and a new beginning!

This isn’t a comprehensive list, but these are definitely some of biggest “life wreckers” out there. Avoid these (or stop doing them) and you can create a life with more significance and fewer regrets.

1. Refusal to take responsibility.

The Bible describes in the detail the difference between a “fool” and a wise person, and one of the main distinctions is that a wise person is quick to accept responsibility for his or her own actions while a “fool” is quick to blame others (or even God) for all the wreckage in their lives.

“People ruin their lives by their own foolishness and then are angry at the Lord.Proverbs 19:3

2. Laziness.

A strong, disciplined work ethic always bring reward while laziness removes options and eventually imprisons you with financial debt and the death of your dreams.

“Work hard and become a leader; be lazy and become a slave.Proverbs 12:24

3. Fear.

Imagine what your life would look like if for even one day, you could live with complete fearlessness. That’s how God wants you life to look everyday! There isn’t enough room in your life for both fear and faith, so each day, you have to decide which one gets to stay!

“This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

4. The Comparison Trap.

It’s easy to get discouraged by looking at others’ “highlight reels” on facebook and Instagram and feel like we don’t measure up. The “Comparison Trap” is a dead-end and it will rob you of your peace and joy. You can learn from others, but you don’t need to compare yourself to anyone. God’s plan for your life is masterfully unique!

“Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else.” Galatians 6:4

Avoid these life-wreckers and embrace the perfect plans God has for your life: “For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord; plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
