3 ways to instantly improve your marriage

3 ways to instantly improve your marriage February 22, 2016

happy couple hug

This past weekend, my amazing wife Ashley and I had the privilege of speaking at a marriage conference where we ended up learning much more than we taught! We interacted with some extraordinary couples from all walks of life. Some had been happily married for half a century, others were newlyweds, and some had overcome (or were in still in the midst of) some incredible challenges. Many of these couples shared with us their best marriage advice. These nuggets of marriage wisdom have already impacted our marriage and I believe this list could have an immediate impact in YOUR marriage as well!

In no particular order..

  1. Every time you make love, put $10 into jar and use it as your “vacation fund.”

Sex should be a consistent priority in marriage, and this is a creative way to encourage more flirtation and more frequency. One husband would often call his wife to say, “I’ve got a ten dollar bill in my pocket” and she’d laugh and say, “And I know just how to spend it!” Once you reach a certain dollar amount, reward yourselves with a getaway for just the two of you. Spend some of the money on a babysitter if necessary, but at least once a year, get out of town alone together and then start a new “vacation fund” as soon as you get back! 2. Turn off all cell phones and devices for at least one hour per day.

It’s possible to be in the same room with someone but still in different worlds when you’re both staring at different screens. If you make some “digital detox” a daily part of your routine, it will create more focused conversations between you and your spouse. Talking with your spouse is always better than texting with somebody else (or playing Candy Crush, or checking Facebook, etc.). For some ways to use your phone to actually help your marriage, you can download our “MarriageApp” from iTunes here.

3. Look for a “mentor couple” and learn from their experience.

One common theme we’ve noticed among that happiest and healthiest couples is that they’ve been intentional about learning from other couples who are more experienced and who are doing it right. Find someone in your life who has the kind of marriage you’d like to have ten or twenty years from now and invite them over for dinner. Pick their brains. They’ll be honored to share their experiences and advice with you and your marriage could drastically improve as a result!
