Second Lieutenant Alix Schoelcher Idrache has an amazing story. He made it to West Point, one of the nation’s most prestigious military schools after immigrating to the United States from Haiti, becoming a US citizen and enlisting in the National Guard in Maryland for two years. Recently, he graduated at the top of his class of 950 and received a prestigious award in physics. He’s come a long way from Port-Au-Prince where as a boy, he watched the US Troops performing humanitarian missions in his native country.

The Washington Post reports:

Idrache wrote Tuesday on Facebook. “I am humbled and shocked at the same time. Thank you for giving me a shot at the American Dream and may God bless America, the greatest country on earth.

Knowing that one day I will be a pilot is humbling beyond words,” Idrache wrote. “I could not help but be flooded with emotions knowing that I will be leading these men and women who are willing to give their all to preserve what we value as the American way of life. To me, that is the greatest honor. Once again, thank you.

My dad always said, ‘Education is the only gift I can always give you, because I don’t have any anything material to give,’” Idrache recalled in the Army news release.

The graduation photograph, showing his tear-stained face as he stands at attention clutching his dress headgear, has gone viral.  What a symbol of the American Dream! Congratulations on your great success Alix – your hard work, grateful spirit and perseverance are an inspiration to all!
