What’s the SOUNDTRACK of your marriage? August 11, 2015

When I was driving the other day, I turned on the radio and heard Peter Gabriel’s Eighties ballad, “In Your Eyes” (click here to watch lyric video) made famous by John Cusack and his romantic boombox scene pictured above from the popular film Say Anything.

My heart swelled and tears filled my eyes as I started to sing along.  I hadn’t heard it in a long time, but this song has always held a very special place in my heart.  You see, even after 15 years together, four kids, three moves, and lots of ups and downs in between…this is still OUR song.  And, it takes me back to when I first fell in love with my husband, Dave,  and reminds me of how it all began.  So, what’s your song?

I love movies, but my very favorite movies usually have an incredibly fun or moving soundtrack.  I think our married lives can sometimes resemble a movie in that way.  Through every season, there is a quiet, underlying soundtrack playing in our  minds.

For example, these days, my life is a lot like the famous Phil Vassar song, “Just Another Day in Paradise” (click here to watch lyric video).  Our home is full of wild boys, piles of laundry, stuff breaking down, deadlines, soccer practices, and well…just plain chaos many days.  And yet, it is some kind of paradise for Dave and I.

We have been told by so many before us that “the days are long, but the years are short” when raising young kids.  My goodness, it’s true.  And, honestly, Phil Vassar’s simple country song helps me to remember how sweet this time really is.  Maybe that is where you are too.  Listen to the song, and I promise you will smile and remember how precious these moments really are.

Or, maybe this isn’t where you are at all.  Maybe married life is harder than you ever expected right now.  You are wondering if it is even worth it or if you two will make it.  Please don’t lose hope.  EVERY marriage has ups and downs; we just have to stay committed to one another and KEEP ON TALKING.

One of my favorite songs describes this so perfectly.  It’s called, “Dancing in the Minefields” (click here to watch music video), by Andrew Peterson.  The lyrics of this song have touched my heart time and time again because it reminds me that the life that Dave and I are building together…the good AND the bad…is a beautiful reflection of God’s grace.  Like my husband has stated in his writings many times,

Sometimes, that means we are dodging and even dancing in some “minefields”, but we are doing it TOGETHER.

So, what is the soundtrack of YOUR marriage right now?  Talk about it with your spouse.  Music has a way of opening up our hearts even when we aren’t sure we want to be vulnerable.  But, we must be vulnerable in our marriage.  Vulnerability increases intimacy, and a highly intimate marriage is a strong marriage.
